Counseling the Abuse Victim, ca. 1979–1980
This training manual is an example of the approach taken by many battered women's support organizations during the 1970s and 1980s. The manual advocated for personal, peer-to-peer support—referred to as "women helping women"—as essential for successful helping relationships. The authors noted that the counseling relationship had to always allow women who were abused the "power of choice" to do what they felt best given their particular situations.
